FOOTBALL STRATEGIES

Football is a sport of power, strength, speed, endurance and finesse. Of all the sports, the need for resistance training in football is probably the most obvious. Conditioning programs and exercises for football must be sport specific.

At whatever level you compete, the individuals who have added weight training to their regimen almost always demonstrate greater aptitude for the game. The weight rooms of high schools, colleges and professional arenas are filled with football players year round.

Unlike most other sports, football players can benefit from working harder and heavier during both the In-Season and the Off-Season. Football players also benefit from their size, unlike most other sports.

Although there are a few very skilled positions in football, overall, each player must be strong and powerful. Every player should have short term speed at least and every player must have superior coordination, particularly in the legs. The skilled positions required endurance and hand eye coordination as well as proper development is specific areas of the body.

Every player will benefit from an overall, full body conditioning program. This type of program prepares and maintains the muscles for the short, 100% intensity required to play the game. Depending on the position you play, then other very specific exercises must be incorporated at some time in your program.

We have trained football players over the last 30 years using both an Off-Season Program and an In-Season Program. As with all programs for athletes and most particular for football, we recommend that the Off-Season Program be the hardest and most intense. It is during this time that the athlete should seek to gain solid weight and strength. During the season, it is too difficult to gain weight, power and strength, due to the very exhaustive nature of the game. The In-Season training should be designed to maintain as much strength as possible, but in actuality, all the strength is developed during off-season training.
